Currently, our VoIP join workflow won't allow you to join the audio conference when a microphone is not detected. Can this be changed to allow VoIP attendees without a mic to join in listen only mode?
Comments
I think this would be great as sometimes people just want to attend a meeting to absorb the information without giving any verbal input since they can always IM their questions.
Many of our users do not have mics so this feature would greatly reduce user audio frustration.
Hello Fuze People? Any updates? I keep having many frustrated users who would love a VOIP solution that doesn't involve a PC mic. Any updates?
Can't understand why you would force people to call long distance just to listen in. VOIP should not care whether they have a mic or not. You do have the chat window (and you have a mute, which is a virtual NO-MIC situation).
The VOIP solution we are currently using does not allow us to establish a connection without an audio device. We are testing alternatives but I can't say yet if they will resolve this.
Thanks Greg. You folks have done a great job with Fuze so far. I know iPads and newer laptops have built-in mics (and vidcams), but an awful lot of corporate IT equipment is still on XP/Vista. Given that most people have unlimited cell phones, calling in on them isn't too much of a problem (although sticking a phone to your ear for 45 minutes is no fun). You have so many good features, we'll work around it, but it is a bit of a pain for many of our customers. Your Pro version is way beyond GoToMeeting!
Thanks for brining this up again Art, I was shocked to see so many users vote for the capability. We will certainly take a look as we move our new audio out to production in the November timeframe (for windows).
Really need this to make Fuze a workable solution for us. We run online training where people listen and can chat via IM but don't need to have a mic. Without this it will alienate a large portion of our audience.
Thanks
+1 for Nick's comment
...especially as Skype also fails to transmit dialpad entries when the system does not have a mic installed, so you can't enter the Fuze room that way either!
Count me in on VOIP with out a Microphone. I have a lot of members that would like to listen only and not participate, It would increase the usage of the system. I have to also admit that FUZE does have a lot going for it. Now to have it come into company IT system just like Anymeeting, Go-to-meeting and ON24 system do.
keep working on it.
Good news, it looks like this will be possible with the new VoIP stack we are testing. It may not make the first release but it should be coming.
Last comment on this issue was November 22nd, 2011. Has there been any update you can share? Really looking forward to some "One-Click" functionality to get the attendee in quickly.
A link that immediately connects the attendee into the "web attendee" slot and the "Audio" slot at once (allow the owner to pre-set some one-click default setting functionality - AutoConnect via VOIP, Cell Etc.)
Agreed - I've just recommended this to our statewide training group of 1,000 instructors - the train 30,000 people a year. I hold 1-2 meetings and trainings per week with many non-technical folks who have a hard enough time with hyperlinks and entering digits and entry codes. Here's some pre-instructions I send via email in advance to folks hoping and praying that the course doesn't fail and I spend more time being the tech support than the instructor. If I continue to spend 45 minutes of a 3 hour training (Includes Only Powerpoint and WMV Videos w/Audio) being tech support, I'm going to have to jump
back to the other companies, I can't afford this kind of continued failure - we need an .exe that does and checks everything and connects a person to the meeting (or something close - one click connect).
Step 1 – Test Your System: https://www.fuzemeeting.com/files/ookla/PROD/Detector.html
(Install any software identified in the test – this is needed to make sure you can connect)
Step 2 – Connect to the meeting: https://www.fuzemeeting.com/fuze/uturn180/meeting#
Step 3 – If you have a microphone (or headset with a microphone) , you can choose VOIP audio option to hear the instructor.
- If you do not have a Microphone, you must call into the AUDIO portion of the meeting by calling the following phone number: 775-xxx-xxxx
All, apologies for the lack of updates on this one. We are laser focused on getting an improved join experience out to our Windows and Mac users. This change should be low effort so I'll see if we can target it for one of our upcoming major releases.
Nick, This has been a requested feature for nearly a year and I share your frustration. There are several things I like about Fuze, but the lack of allowing attendees to join with VoIP has been a deal killer for my company too. We dropped our Fuze account awhile ago and are using a competitors product. There simply is no choice. I'm sure the lack of this feature presents a barrier to this product's successful use for many others. If and when they actually follow through and close this glaring weakness, I'll probably reopen my account with Fuze (unless they get pricky with those of us trying to get them to listen--I can do without bullying from a supplier who won't listen to their customers needs and then gets petulant when we do what we have to do to use a viable webinar/conferencing tool). The sad part is that in other areas they are superior (10 videos, good quality, fixed meeting url, etc). I suspect they would dominate the market (or at least be a major player instead of a small niche) if they addressed this major weakness. Fuze, delete mine for being angry if you like, but you are making a mistake in not listening to us. We WANT to use your product, or we wouldn't bother giving you feedback. And, mentioning your competitors isn't like revealing otherwise unknown options. Seriously, dudes, get over yourselves and get with meeting customers needs.
Oh, and Nick, you were right. Fuze's failure has been a won for ! from our company.
Amealer, yup I was pretty excited when I came across Fuze a few months ago. We've been using a competitor (and as you say, it's no secret who the other players are!) for around 4 years and I'd love to move to Fuze but the lack of some really basic stuff, like no-mic attendance, being able to pause recordings, being able to schedule training courses over multiple sessions - all of which I would expect 'out of the box', not as extra features - will prevent us from doing so.
The instant removal of a post that dared to mention a competitor didn't go down too well either.
Perhaps a little history might help. We tried to implement VoIP without a microphone input over a year ago but found our old VoIP solution did not support it. Several months ago, we implemented a new VoIP solution for Fuze for both Mac and PC. It greatly improved echo cancellation and made VoIP a viable option for our customers. This new VoIP "stack" also made it possible to support VoIP without an audio source. The code to support this is now in the product and we require small User Interface changes so a Microphone source can be set to "None". I realized yesterday while reviewing topics that this final change was overlooked. I discussed it with our VP of client development and although we are in code freeze, we are trying to get it in. If it causes problems during test, it will be removed so as not to delay an important release. I didn't want to quote a specific date in my update post because this feature still might get pulled. We will do everything possible to get this change in.
Any for anyone who is interested in the backstory of the deleted post, here was my response to Nick:
"Nick,
Feel free to repost your original content if you wish and I'll gladly respond publicly. I've copied my CEO on this message so if you think I've acted unfairly, please feel free to take it up with him. As an aside, your post is the first ever removed from our forms. While I'm sure the anonymity of the internet makes posts seem impersonal, your note did catch me at a particularly bad time. Yesterday, we finally demonstrated the #1 most requested feature on our forums to a community member (export recording). It was a satisfying achievement for us to show our customers we are listening. With the week ending on an up note, I was enjoying a nice Friday night dinner when your post notification arrived. While the content of your message was fair, the parting shot of "looks like another win for GoToTraining!" seemed a little unnecessary don't you think?
If you are really that unhappy with Fuze, I'll personally refund your subscription fee or find another way to right the wrongs that made you sing the praises of our competitors on a Fuze forum. While it may not make headlines, we are focused on delivering what our customers clearly tell us they want most: Quality and reliability. We've made substantial improvements to VoIP quality, our international dial infrastructure, our mobile apps, etc. We are finishing up a release that should make the majority of join problems a thing of the past. Hopefully you'll see the benefit of those improvements.
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback,
Greg"
And, for the record, my reply to Greg:
"Greg,
As far as I'm concerned this is done and dusted, and based on Greg's comments we're still planning on hanging in there with Fuze.
Well, our new Windows plugin is progressing nicely but this feature is not going to make it. It turns out that our VoIP requires two way audio so to support VoIP without a mic requires we create a phantom audio source and send a silent stream. We are going to be working on the solution but it won't make the release at the end of April.
